Night Running

Nightwalks by Charles Dickens

Some years ago, a temporary inability to sleep ... caused me to walk about the streets all night, for a series of several nights... The month was March, and the weather damp, cloudy, and cold... the river had an awful look, the buildings on the banks were muffled in black shrouds, and the reflected lights seemed to originate deep in the water, as if the spectres of suicides were holding them to show where they went down. The wild moon and clouds were as restless as an evil conscience in a tumbled bed, and the very shadow of the immensity of London seemed to lie oppressively upon the river.

Rotherhithe Snowstorm

The Conversation of Old Men by Thom Gunn

He feels a breeze rise from
the Thames, as far off
as Rotherhithe, in
intimate contact with
water, slimy hulls,
dark wood greenish
at waterline - touching
then leaving what it
lightly touches; he
goes on talking, and this is
the life of wind on water.

Comment: Thom Gunn was born by the river in Gravesend.

The Great Cathedrals Of Power: Lots Road

Construction began in 1902 and was completed in December 1904, the power station becoming operational in February 1905. The station burned 700 tonnes of coal a day and had a generating capacity of 50,000 kW. At the time it was claimed to be the largest power station ever built, and it eventually powered much of the tube. It was finally shut down on 21 October 2002, and the tube system has since been powered by the National Grid. [Source: Wikipedia]

Comment: Building work began in 2013. Two skyscrapers will rise, 37 and 25 stories respectively.

Welcome

"The Thames is liquid history."  John Burns (1858-1943), a Vauxhall born Liberal MP, helped create the first council estate in 1903 (Battersea's Latchmere Estate) and campaigned for the workers in the London Dock Strike of 1889. Burns loved cricket and loathed beer. [Source: Wikipedia]
